Willie Beech is evacuated to a small village in the country just before the outbreak of WWII. A lonely and deprived child, he finds himself living with the reclusive, gruff old widower, Tom Oakley. Tom soon realizes that willie has been damaged mentally and physically at the hands of his strict mother. He sets about undoing the damage, teaching willie to read, write and draw.
